Sometimes, at night, I can hear the train rumble under 4th Ave.
at a different time, the slight tremor would have helped put me to sleep
but these days nothing can seem to help me sleep.
I've tried many of my old remedies. The half bottle of Jameson and Ira Glass' voice from my speakers attest to that.
When I was a kid growing up in Castile I could hear the freight trains in the distant every night.
They would signal before coming into town to warn the two crossing.
I lived a mile from the tracks, but I had friends who lived right by them.
When I heard the horn and rumble I imagined how loud it must be for them, how it must wake them or keep them up awake.
But for me, it was the perfect distance to make the sounds beautiful, sounds that still haunt me.
